8 Simple Strategies To Banish Stress And Embrace Peaceful Living

Let’s be honest for a moment. Life can feel like a whirlwind. Between juggling work, family commitments, and those unexpected instances of chaos (seriously, why do appliances only decide to break down during your busiest weeks?), keeping everything balanced can seem nearly impossible. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you’re not alone. I get it. Having spent over 20 years helping individuals and families bring order to their homes, I can confidently tell you this: when your home is organized, life feels significantly lighter.

I’m Jo Jacob, the founder of Benella Home Organisation. Throughout my career, I’ve collaborated closely with an array of clients—from busy professionals chasing deadlines to families that are trying to maximize their space, as well as those navigating the sensitive process of downsizing or coping with loss. I’ve witnessed firsthand how decluttering, organizing, and creating functional spaces have transformative powers. It’s not just about clearing physical items; it’s about crafting a home that provides mental and emotional relief. A clutter-free environment gives you space to breathe—not just in your physical surroundings, but emotionally too.

So, let’s dive into some of my most effective strategies for maintaining a sense of calm amidst the chaos. Here are my 8 top tips for stress-free living:

    1. Start Small and Stay Consistent

Feeling overwhelmed by a mountain of mess? It’s important to remember that great journeys start with a single step. Instead of tackling everything at once—which can easily lead to burnout—begin with a manageable task: clear out a single drawer, a shelf, or a small surface. I like to call this my “Kettle Boils Tidy-Up.” While you wait for the kettle to boil or while dinner cooks, take just five minutes to declutter. These tiny moments can add up to significant progress. And if you find yourself needing a little motivation, put on your favorite playlist and have a mini dance party while you tidy!

    2. Set Up Systems That Work for You

Your home doesn’t need to look like it just came off Pinterest. It should serve you! Set up functional systems that streamline your daily routines. This could be as simple as creating a designated tray by the door for your keys and mail, using labeled baskets for everyone’s shoes, or having a dedicated drawer for takeaway menus and miscellaneous essentials like batteries and candles. When everything has its spot, it saves you time and frustration—and hopefully reduces the number of times you’re asked, “Where did I leave my…?”

    3. Give Yourself Permission to Let Go

One of the biggest hurdles in organizing is emotional guilt. You know the kind—the struggle you face when contemplating whether to keep gifts you never use or those baby clothes from years ago. Here’s a little reassurance: your home isn’t a museum.

Your space should reflect who you are today and the life you envision for tomorrow—not just serve as a holding area for past memories. Keep what sparks joy or serves a purpose and gently let go of the rest. If you find it hard to part with something, consider saying “thank you” for its role in your life as you release it.

    4. Meal Plan to Minimize Daily Stress

Decluttering isn’t just about physical items—it extends to your kitchen too. The nightly dinner conundrum affects all of us at one time or another. Planning your meals for the week can significantly ease stress and even save you money. Dedicate just 10 minutes each Sunday to jot down your dinner plans and make a shopping list. I also encourage a little decluttering while you cook—maybe clean out your spice rack while something simmers. Little actions can turn the mundane into a productive routine.

    5. Create a Calm Zone

In those moments where your home might feel chaotic, carve out at least one calm zone—perhaps your bedside table, a cozy corner of the living room, or a reading nook that feels welcoming. Keep it clutter-free, serene, and delightful. Having just one space that feels peaceful can do wonders for your mindset and help ground you when everything else seems overwhelming.

    6. Don’t Wait for the Perfect Time

Spoiler alert: it doesn’t exist! Life won’t magically slow down to create the perfect opportunity for you to get organized. Embrace starting imperfectly. Tackle a drawer today and a cupboard tomorrow. Every small step makes a difference, and believe me, those tiny wins will inspire you to keep going.

    7. Use the Right Tools

You don’t have to break the bank to create an organized living space, but having a few practical tools can make a world of difference. Think clear jars for snacks, velvet hangers for your wardrobe, stylish wicker baskets to hide clutter, or a straightforward weekly planner to keep everything on track. However, a quick reminder: don’t buy storage solutions until you’ve decluttered! It’s a common pitfall; if you load up on containers before clearing out the old, you might just turn them into a pile of clutter.

    8. Treat Organisation as Self-Care

Decluttering is often viewed as a tedious chore, but it can actually be a nurturing and fulfilling act. By creating an organized space, you’re paving the way for the lifestyle you wish to cultivate. Think of it as a gift to your future self, creating more peace and order in your life.

In closing, an organized home doesn’t need to be perfect. Mine certainly isn’t. Instead, think of it as a sanctuary that feels good to inhabit, one that supports your busy life and welcomes you at the end of a long day. If you’re ready to embark on a journey towards stress-free living—one that makes you feel lighter and more at ease—remember to start small, stay consistent, and most importantly, be gentle with yourself.
