Stanley may have just given its customers one less reason to stand in line for the sought-after travel mug this holiday season. Approximately 2.6 million Stanley Cups were recalled on Thursday, December 12, due to concerns over defective lids that have been linked to burn injuries. Of the 91 incidents reported worldwide, 16 occurred in the United States. Globally, 38 incidents reportedly led to burns, with 11 requiring medical attention. Before you decide to part ways with your Stanley, here’s what you need to know about the recall concerning the company’s stainless-steel travel mugs.
Why are Stanley cups being recalled?
The mugs involved in this recall are not the viral Stanley Quencher tumblers that have generated significant buzz over the past few years. Instead, it involves the 12- and 16-ounce Switchback travel mugs, along with the 12-, 16-, and 20-ounce Trigger Action travel mugs. As outlined by the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission), the threading on the lid (the section that screws into the cup) can contract and detach when exposed to heat, creating a burn risk for users if the travel mug contains hot liquids. This isn’t quite the pleasant morning commute you were expecting.
The Switchback double-walled mug is designed to keep beverages hot for roughly four hours, while the Trigger Action can maintain heat for around seven hours. These products have been available for purchase since June 2016 and can be found at most major retailers, although they were removed from many websites at the time of this report.

A representative from Stanley stated to Well+Good, “Stanley 1913 is voluntarily recalling the Switchback [12 oz and 16 oz] and Trigger Action [12 oz, 16 oz and 20 oz] Travel Mugs, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). We have addressed the issue and are offering a free replacement lid to work with the existing product. At Stanley 1913, we are committed to constant improvement and are focused on creating quality products that are built for life.”
